Jason Butcher shows movie madness at As in a Mirror, Dimly

Artist's gessoed wood drawings full of intricate twists and turns

KNOCK ON WOOD: “Insert Erection Joke Here” by Jason Butcher
KNOCK ON WOOD: “Insert Erection Joke Here” by Jason Butcher

Jason Butcher presents the drawings of As in a Mirror, Dimly, his current Beep Beep Gallery show, as snapshots from the set of a hypothetical movie, even down to the lighting and soundboards painstakingly drawn into nearly every scene. The works are rich, velvety, and extraordinarily detailed — all done with an architect's mechanical pencil on gessoed wood. In some of the works, Butcher has applied the white base coat more lightly, which preserves the texture of the wood grain and, once colored over with graphite, gives the look of a gray and white plaid. Many of the drawings seem plucked from movie trailers, alluding to impending scenes of graphic violence or sex before cutting to the aftermath. But as the viewer moves through the gallery it becomes apparent that the narrative is more concerned with the actors behind the scenes rather than the characters in the movie.

"Benched Ritual"

New work by Travis Dodd

September 8th - 30th

Benched Ritual is a compelling mix of mystery and quest in the midst of a concrete reality.  Atlanta artist, Travis Dodd, combines found material with photography as evidence of his journeys into the internal.  In this series, he explores abandoned or neglected spaces and excavates by boring into walls using a variety of tools. Working with the metaphor of the labyrinth, it is Dodd’s intent to portray the importance of establishing individual myth, while seeking authentic-self.

Travis Dodd received his BFA in Photography in 2002from the Savannah College of Art and Design.  He is currently seeking a MA degree in Sculpture from the Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta Campus.  His work has been featured in a number of publications including Oxford American and Urge Magazine.  Travis has exhibited in several past group shows at Beep Beep including 2009's "Popaganda" and 2011's "Double Vision".

This is his first solo exhibition at Beep Beep.

"As in a Mirror, Dimly: Scenes from a Film I will Never Finish"
New Drawings by Jason R. Butcher

August 4 - August 31

"As in a Mirror, Dimly" features a set of all new drawings by Atlanta artist Jason R. Butcher.  His new work focuses on imagery related to what Butcher describes as "a film I will never finish".  Each drawing gives a voyeur's perspective from someone working on a surreal dream-like set, with each scene laid out and lit exactly as the artist would do in order to shoot the film.  The drawings depict a series of everyday occurrences which, while appearing in sequence, contain no narrative structure.  Originating as story-boards, the drawings serve as a documentation of ideas that could become a film but since that film will never be finished, the drawings in turn become their own artistic statement.

This is Jason's first solo exhibition at Beep Beep Gallery.
